Combining 80′s arcade classics with live 8-bit inspired music, it’s the newest craze hitting the nation (and by nation we mean… just here).. Arcade-O-Vision is an interactive concert that champions the joystick and bubblegum arcade of yesteryear while bringing local bands to soundtrack the games live.

Levels 1-3 Performed by Electric Opera Company
Levels 4-6 Performed by Cosmic Fluke

Who?!?

That one is easy! Arcade-O-Vision is a trifecta collaboration twixt:

Ground Kontrol:
Ground Kontrol is the West Coast’s premier classic arcade, preserving and celebrating video gaming’s “golden age” by operating over 60 classic video games and 27 pinball machines, and selling refurbished vintage home systems such as the Atari 2600, Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo.

Filmusik:
Based out of Portland, Oregon. Filmusik is a collaborative performance group of musicians, composers and actors creating a unique movie experience by performing a new soundtrack for classic films live in the pit.

Hollywood Theatre:
The Hollywood Theatre is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to entertain, inspire, educate and connect the community through the art of film while preserving a historic Portland landmark.

What…. Exactly?!?

Basically Arcade-O-Vision is a simple premise; playing old arcade games on a 30 foot screen with a live band. This is the first in our series that we’re looking to continue on into the summer and fall. The Ninja Turtle arcade game was a tricky one if you recall (I’m sure your parents do anyhow, it probably put them out of at least $9 in quarters). Everyone get to play and folks swap out with every life and there are prizes for the highest single quarter score of the evening (all prizes by Ground Kontrol). There are some other arcade games in the lobby as well so you can hone up on your joystick reflexes prior to hitting the big screen.

Before the round-robin tournament we’re screening the 1990 movie. If you never saw it in theatre in 1990, now is the chance. Check out the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Urnzz-eXO8. Tickets are good for both the movie and the arcade rumble.

Our July concert features 2 local ensembles:

Cosmic Fluke:
Based out of Portland, Oregon, Cosmic Fluke is America’s leading genre-bending, line-blurring, boundary-eliminating, soul-massaging, boredom-curing, shape-shifting, fun-loving music machine. Every note wants to travel with you, explore with you, absorb with you, connect with you, project with you, create with you, eat French toast with you…

Electric Opera Company:
Electric Opera Company is a groundbreaking nonprofit theater company based in Portland, Oregon that combines the worlds of Opera and Rock music. Wielding the force of a 15 piece Electric Orchestra, EOC revitalizes classic scores to bring the music of Mozart, Wagner, Rossini, and other masters of opera to a new generation.

When, Now?!?

On July 14th. The movie is at 7pm and the arcade games start at 9pm. We’re planning on hosting monthly events that bring local groups to the Hollywood Theatre for the mondo-huge arcade experience. Street Fighter and funk? Yes! Zydeco and Mario Kart? Maybe? Free-jazz and Tetris? Definitely!

The Hollywood Theatre is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to entertain, inspire, educate and connect the community through the art of film while preserving a historic Portland landmark.

HISTORY

The Hollywood Theatre is an important landmark for the Portland area and gave the Hollywood neighborhood its name. Originally a 1,500-seat venue, the Hollywood has experienced many transformations since its completion in 1926. Designed by architects Harry Herzog and John V. Bennes, the Hollywood was the last venue in Portland built both as a vaudeville house and as a movie theatre. Because sound did not come to the big screen until well into1927, the theatre space was configured to accommodate an eight piece orchestra and an organist to accompany the silent films. A variety of live acts filled out the evening’s entertainment.

In the early 1960′s the Hollywood was transformed into the first Cinerama theatre in the Pacific Northwest. This ultra-widescreen film format required the addition of two projection booths and a huge wrap-around screen. After the novelty of Cinerama had dissipated and more cost effective wide screen formats were developed, more changes occurred. In 1975 walls and projection booths were built to divide the Theatre’s balcony and create three separate auditorium spaces. The Theatre currently includes a 450-seat main auditorium (the original orchestra), a 165-seat venue (one-half of the original balcony), and a 218-seat venue (the other half of the original balcony). All three venues are capable of screening films. The Theatre has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since September 1, 1983. In 1997, Film Action Oregon (FAO) recognized the opportunity to preserve an important part of Oregon’s cultural history by purchasing the Hollywood Theatre. FAO quickly realized the Theatre’s essential role in the surrounding Northeast Portland community. In the fall of1997, Film Action Oregon’s small staff began to transform the neglected second-run theatre back into the thriving community treasure it once had been. In 2011, the non-profit dropped the name Film Action Oregon, and now is just known as the Hollywood Theatre.
